The Career Mentor Symposium was held on Wednesday, March 7 2012 at Matrix Hotel in Edmonton. This even which was hosted by ERIEC and sponsored by some leading Engineering companies aimed to provide a platform for potential employers and prospective employees to network and to share information together. Most of the attendees have benefited from their presence and networking activities. From my perspective, there are some benefits I gained from this event.
First of all, the inspirational speech by Nick Noorani echoed my thoughts and provided me the most encouraging signals. Nick talked about the challenges and opportunities for immigrants to Canada and shared some valuable experience and perceptions. The seven secrets to success for immigrants are very practical and useful for me because these information and evidences have verified and justified my value by the perspective of the predecessors. My thoughts have been strengthened and I am encouraged to keep going in that way.
In addition to the speech, networking with the past graduates from ETIP program gave me clearer job prospect for me and my classmates. This can help me to be more realistic in the job hunting process. Besides, I also learned some tactics to prepare resume and cover letter specifically targeting some positions.
Overall, my presence and active involvement in the symposium bring benefits by gaining useful information and networking people inside the circle. As the words saying, 90% success comes from show up.
